The original Bond girl, Eunice Gayson, has died at the age of 90.
“We are so sad to learn that Eunice Gayson, our very first ‘Bond girl’ who played Sylvia Trench in DR. NO and FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE has passed away,” Bond producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli said in a statement on Twitter.
“Our sincere thoughts are with her family.”
A post shared on the actress’ official Twitter feed confirmed she died Friday. The message said she would be greatly missed and remembered her as “an amazing lady who left a lasting impression on everyone she met.”
Gayson cemented her place in pop culture history with her portrayal of the sultry Sylvia Trench and is famous for setting up one of James Bonds’ most iconic moments.
While enjoying a card game with the Sean Connery’s 007 at Le Cercle Club casino, she suggests upping the stakes to which Bond replies: “I admire your courage, Miss …?”
“Trench. Sylvia Trench,” she fires back. “I admire your luck Mr. ...”
“Bond, James Bond,” the agent, at the time played by Sean Connery, responds.
Born in Surrey, U.K. in 1928, Grayson has several on screen roles, including Hammer Horror’s “The Revenge of Frankenstein,” before appearing in Dr. No in 1962.
She returned as Sylvia Trench in “From Russia with Love,” making her the only Bond girl to appear in two Bond films. Trench was originally slated to be a recurring character, but that idea was eventually scrapped by “Goldfinger” director Guy Hamilton.
Gayson’s career has spanned more than 50 years. Following her successful turn in the 007 franchise, Gayson starred in television series including “The Saint” and “The Avengers.”
