Mother seeks help finding ex-Marine accused of killing daughter

A former police detective is asking for the public's help in locating the former Marine accused of killing her daughter — a man she calls a "viper."
Josephine Wentzel sobbed at a press conference Tuesday when speaking about her daughter Krystal Mitchell's June 2016 murder. She appeared alongside family members wearing T-shirts with an image of Mitchell’s face on them.
Raymond "Matt" McLeod, 34 — who also goes by R.J. — was charged with murder after Mitchell's lifeless body was found beaten and battered inside a condominium she'd been vacationing at with McLeod. They'd been dating for three weeks.
The muscle-bound McLeod has been on the run since, and was last seen in Guatemala in March of 2017, authorities said.
"Catching McLeod will not bring my daughter back, but would prevent this monster from killing someone else's mother, daughter or sister," Wentzel said. "It would also mean that Krystal's children can sleep at night, knowing he's been stopped."
Mitchell was a single mother living in Phoenix with her children, who were 5 and 6, at the time of her death.
Wentzel said she's seeking justice for her grandchildren, for whom she's now caring.
"I have to bring peace to my grandchildren," she said. "I want them to know that Nana did everything possible to bring justice to the man responsible for the death of their mother," she said.
She's leery of McLeod and has warned other women to avoid him.
"He is charming, he is deceiving, he is a liar, and he is a viper," Wentzel said of McLeod.
Wentzel noted that McLeod presented no warning signs to her daughter.

“He came across as a doting dad ... everything was right about him,” she said at the press conference Tuesday. “There was nothing to alert her that he was a terrible person.”
Wentzel lives in Vancouver, Wash., and investigated robberies, thefts and sometimes murders for the Guam Police Department.
She's aided police in their efforts to locate McLeod, creating a website dedicated to finding him and sharing fliers on various social media channels in Mexico and Central America. She's also contacted hostels and newspapers in the area.
"This is not a mother you want to mess with," San Diego District Attorney Summer Stephan said.
McLeod was previously accused of strangling a wife who survived when a roommate intervened. The felony case was pending when he attacked Mitchell.
He had also been convicted of domestic violence against a third woman, Stephan said.
Authorities believe McLeod is living among expatriates in Central America, and say that he's known to frequent nightclubs.
He is also believed to be a drug user who regularly visits strip clubs.
Authorities said he could be using the name "Matt" or "Mateo" to disguise his identity.
An $11,000 reward is being offered to anyone with information that leads to McLeod's arrest.
